If you’ve ever noticed a faint chlorine smell from the tap, white scale crusting up your kettle and showerheads, or sediment in the bottom of a glass after heavy rain, you’re not imagining it. Caboolture’s town water is safe to drink, but it carries chlorine, dissolved minerals and, especially after a storm, sediment and turbidity that town treatment doesn’t fully strip out.
A whole-house water filter fixes that at the point the water enters your home, so every tap, shower and appliance gets filtered water. Not just the kitchen sink, the whole house. Here’s how it works and what it actually does for a Caboolture home.

Whole-house vs under-sink: what’s the difference?
An under-sink filter only treats the water at one tap. It’s fine if all you want is better drinking water in the kitchen. But it does nothing for your showers, your hot water system, your washing machine or the rest of the house.
A whole-house system installs on the main water line where it enters the property, so everything downstream is filtered:
- Every tap and shower: no chlorine smell or taste anywhere in the house, not just the kitchen.
- Your hot water system: reducing the sediment and mineral load that builds scale on the element and inside the tank. This is a big one in Caboolture’s hard water.
- Washing machine and dishwasher: cleaner water means less scale in the appliance and better results from detergent.
- Bathrooms: less chlorine on skin and hair, which a lot of people notice straight away in the shower.
We install Puretec whole-house systems
We fit Puretec whole-house filtration, an Australian brand we trust and one of the most widely used systems for residential point-of-entry filtration. The reason we standardise on Puretec is simple: the cartridges are easy to source, the housings are reliable, and we can match the system to what your water actually needs rather than selling you more than you require.
Most Caboolture homes are well served by a dual-stage setup:
- Stage one, sediment: a sediment cartridge captures dirt, rust, sand and the turbidity that spikes after heavy rain. This is the filter that protects everything downstream.
- Stage two, carbon: a carbon cartridge removes chlorine, improves taste and smell, and reduces a range of other contaminants.
For properties with heavier requirements (bore water, a more demanding water quality issue, or a larger home), we can step up to a triple-stage system or add UV treatment, which kills bacteria and is worth considering on rainwater or bore supply. We assess the water and the household first, then recommend the right system. No overselling.
Why it matters in Caboolture
- Hard water and scale. Caboolture’s water is moderately hard. Filtering the sediment and mineral load on the way in slows the scale buildup that chokes hot water systems, blocks fittings and shortens the life of every water-using appliance in the house.
- Post-storm turbidity. After heavy rain the supply can carry visible sediment and the water can run cloudy. A sediment stage handles exactly this.
- Chlorine. Town water is chlorinated for safety. A carbon stage takes the chlorine taste and smell out so your drinking water and your showers are more pleasant.
Cartridge changes keep it working
A filter only works while the cartridges are fresh. As a guide, sediment and carbon cartridges are typically replaced every 6 to 12 months depending on your water quality and usage. We set you up with a reminder schedule and can handle the changes for you, or supply the cartridges if you’d rather swap them yourself, since they’re designed to be straightforward.
What does a whole-house system cost?
As a rough guide, a supplied-and-installed Puretec system ranges start from around $1,500 to $7,000 and above for a larger or more advanced system, for example triple-stage or one with UV treatment added. But that’s only a guide. The final figure depends on the system your water actually needs, the plumbing at the point of entry, and access. Replacement cartridges are an ongoing cost on top, typically a modest amount each change.
There are too many variables to quote a flat price, so we assess your water and your home first and give you an accurate quote with no surprises. Call 1300 793 962 or contact us to book a whole-house water filter assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Is Caboolture town water safe to drink without a filter?
Yes. Town water is treated to Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and is safe to drink straight from the tap. A whole-house filter isn’t about safety. It’s about removing chlorine taste and smell, reducing sediment and scale, and protecting your appliances and hot water system from the mineral load.
Will a whole-house filter soften the water?
Not in the way a dedicated water softener does. A standard sediment-and-carbon system reduces the sediment and mineral load and slows scale buildup, but it doesn’t replace the calcium and magnesium ions the way an ion-exchange softener does. For most Caboolture homes the filtration approach is the simpler, lower-maintenance solution. If you have a specific hardness problem we can talk through the options.
How often do the cartridges need changing?
As a guide, every 6 to 12 months depending on your water quality and how much water the household uses. Heavier sediment loads, common after a wet season, shorten the life of the sediment cartridge. We set up a reminder schedule so you never run a clogged filter, and we can do the changes or supply the cartridges for you.
Can you add UV treatment?
Yes. UV treatment kills bacteria and is worth considering if you’re on rainwater or bore supply, or you simply want the extra protection. It’s added as a stage in the system. We’ll tell you whether it’s worth it for your situation rather than fitting it as a default.
Does a whole-house filter help my hot water system?
Yes, and this is one of the underrated benefits. By reducing the sediment and mineral load entering the system, a whole-house filter slows the scale buildup that coats the heating element, lines the tank and shortens the life of the unit. It won’t eliminate scale entirely, but in Caboolture’s hard water it meaningfully extends the life of your hot water system.
